Cricut has now released over 110 different cartridges in the Cricut collection, and the list continues to grow.

Cricut cartridges are essential to the operation of the Circut Expression or any of the other models. In addition to your imagination, all of the creativity you get out of the cricut line comes of course from the cartridges that are used with the cricut machines. Each machine comes with its own cartridge to help crafters get started using their Cricut. With the Expression you get two cartridges; Plantin SchoolBook font cartridge and Accent Essentials shape cartridge.

The wide mix of Cricut Expression cartridges on the market offers a limitless array of design capabilities. In addition, new cartridges are being released regularly. With the wide range of font, shape and licensed cartridges, it’s no wonder that Cricut machines continue to be one of the most popular scrapbooking tools available today.

Usually, once a crafter gets started he or she will quickly realize that there are many more Cricut cartridges available in several different categories. Currently there are over 110 different cartridges to choose from. Each cartridge comes with a keyboard overlay, which is used in selecting specific cuts. A very important feature is that the cartridges are not machine-specific - they can be used in any of the three models. So therefore, you can produce cutouts based upon the cartridges you own.

Cricut cartridges are electronic cartridges that clip in to the Cricut Expression machine which hold different letters, shapes, patterns, images or styles for cutting with the Cricut Expression. Cartridges cover a wide array of shapes and styles on many different topics and themes. As an example, you could choose a cartridge that comprises of baby shapes if you were creating a baby invitations, baby cards or a baby scrapbook. This sort of cartridge may hold designs, images, lettering, icons, linked to the theme 'baby' such as diapers, rattles, bottles, cradles, safety pins, rattles, etc. You simply plug the cartridge into the Cricut Expression machine, then all of the shapes contained in the cartridge would be available for you to cut out shapes for your baby theme scrapbook project.

Cricut Expression cartridges can be grouped into 6 different categories – which are classified as Font, Shape, Licensed, Classmate, Solutions, and Seasonal.

SIX Types of Cricut Cartridges

Font Cartridges - Cricut font cartridges contain fonts that range from basic and practical to clever and fanciful. Each cartridge contains enough designs to print an entire alphabet. In addition, some cartridges feature more than one font type and some shapes that coordinate with the font. Popular font cartridges include the Calligraphy Collection, Accent Essentials, Opposites Attract, and All Mixed Up.

Shape Cartridges - Shape cartridges are focused on icons and shapes than they are on words and letters. The Wild Card cartridge is a classic example of a shape cartridge. This cartridge is filled with all of the shapes needed to create cards and envelopes. The Tags, Bags, Boxes and More cartridge is another great shape cartridge that can be used as the basis for a wide variety of projects.

License Cartridges - Unlike font cartridges or shape cartridges, licensed Cricut cartridges aren’t necessarily centered on fonts or shapes. Instead, the images on licensed cartridges are designed to coordinate with popular characters like Hello Kitty or Mickey Mouse. Some include playful fonts that embody the spirit of their character. Others include only shapes or words. Licensed cricut cartridges let you create your designs that include popular characters (like Mickey Mouse) and images that are owned by artists like Disney and others.

Classmate Cartridges - The Classmate series are specifically designed for use in the classroom. This is an essential tool if you are a teacher or work in the educational field. The Classmate line of cartridges is really a great teaching resource.

Solutions Cartridges - The Solutions line of Cricut cartridges is perfect for crafters who want to minimize their spending costs. The Solutions cartridges do not carry the same price tag as the other cartridges because they do not include as many designs and features. Solutions cartridges are available in almost as many styles as the other cartridges.

Seasonal Cartridges - The new Cricut Seasonal Cartridges are limited editions and will not be available after initial production is depleted. Three new seasonal cartridges will be released every quarter. The Cricut Seasonal cartridges will focus on special days, events and projects and will be limited to only 50 images per cartridge. There will be 15 seasonal cartridges in 2010! Seasonal cartridges are packaged like the Solutions cartridges (without the binder and booklet).
